In 1982 the NFPA Board approved the formation of the NFPA Research Foundation (now known as the Fire Protection Research Foundation). In order to ensure that research carried out was independent, the Foundation was formed as a separate 501(c) (3) organization. The Foundation's mission is to plan, manage and communicate research in support of the NFPA mission.
